In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling meadows, resided a shepherd boy. His existence was pure, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was mainly to look after his flock of sheep.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the wind across the lone tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day in day, watching over his wards instilled in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for company. In one such instance out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty plot.
Stories of predators preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a joke on the villagers.
One afternoon he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a here wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but saw no wolf.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This game continued for a few more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf actually charge at the herd. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the town only to receive a scolding on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is tough to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
